Career Advancement
If you are looking for a change in career, you are perhaps in the best country to do so.
The Singapore government has numerous well-funded and established programmes that can help with career switching.
There are also numerous other options that are very accessible for working adults to get on.
Academic Qualifications
Academic qualifications encompass diplomas, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees, and Ph.D.s.
For those eyeing career advancement, academic qualifications are invaluable. Possessing the relevant academic credentials can often be the key to convincing superiors that you're ready for a promotion.
In the competitive race for promotions, academic qualifications can give you an edge over your peers.
In a place like Singapore, where education is highly regarded, this might be the crucial factor that tips the balance in your favor, especially when switching companies.
Opting for part-time programs is a strategic choice, as they allow you to further your studies without having to leave your current job. Here's a list of part-time academic qualifications available:
- Part-time bachelor's degree
- Part-time master's degree
- Part-time Ph.D.
In a study of 200 managerial positions in Singapore, we found that 74% required at least a bachelor's degree, while 17% demanded a master's degree. This suggests that to ascend the career ladder, having a bachelor's degree might be essential.
When considering senior managerial and directorial roles, our assessment of 100 positions revealed that 21% demanded a master's degree at a minimum. Moreover, a staggering 94% required at least a bachelor's degree. Interestingly, none of the 300 positions we reviewed listed a Ph.D. as a prerequisite. However, holding a Ph.D. can significantly set you apart, especially in fields like education.
Executive Programs
Executive programs are short courses usually offered by universities for mid to senior level professionals.
Spanning just a few weeks to a few months, admissions to such programs usually depends on your work experience, rather than your academic qualifications. Here, "work experience" primarily refers to the number of years spent in a particular field and the roles undertaken.
There are two primary reasons why executive programs are particularly beneficial:
- Reputation & Credibility: Many of these programs are offered by reputable institutions, including the likes of NUS and Harvard. Harvard, for example, offers various online executive courses focusing on practical soft skills. The distinction of graduating from such a prestigious executive program can significantly enhance your resume, increasing your odds of securing higher-level or leadership positions. Simply put, these programs can provide an immediate boost to your professional trajectory.
Remember, the reputation of the institution can often hold as much weight, if not more, than the specific soft skills you acquire. Thus, it's important to choose an executive program from a well-regarded institution.
- Practical Skills & Networking: These programs also provide you with practical skills to navigate real-world business challenges. The exposure to latest business trends ensures participants remain ahead of the curve, while the networking opportunities within these courses can open doors to new collaborations and roles.
Professional Certifications
In some industries, professional certifications are needed for further career advancements.
For instance, certs like Certified Public Accountant (CPA) Singapore and Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) are some crucial certs that allow you to advance your career in Singapore’s finance sector. In other fields, project management professional (PMP) is needed for numerous higher project management roles in Singapore.
Some benefits of Professional Certificates include:
- Recognition and Validation: Holding a professional certificate can act as proof of one's proficiency in a particular domain. This can be beneficial when seeking promotions or venturing into new job roles.
- Cost and Time-Efficient: Compared to lengthy academic courses, many professional certification programs are shorter and more affordable, allowing working professionals to quickly upskill without a significant time or financial commitment.

Professional Certifications
Professional certificates differ from standard academic qualifications like degrees or diplomas. These are specialized credentials awarded by recognized institutions, emphasizing the acquisition of specific skills or knowledge in a given field. Unlike broader academic courses, these certifications have a clear focus on practical, skill-based learning.
It can help you get a job in the specific field easily, especially since you have the skills and competency to perform well in the new field.
Coverage:
Professional certificates cover a wide range of industries and roles. Examples include:
- ACCA Qualification (for accountancy)
- Certificate in Practical Counselling (for counseling roles)
- WSQ-Operate Forklift (for equipment operation in logistics and warehouses)
Relevance to Career Change:
Professional certificates can be pivotal for those eyeing a career change due to the following reasons:
- Specialization: These programs equip candidates with a distinct set of skills pertinent to particular industries or roles. Such specialization makes candidates attractive to employers in those sectors.
- Efficiency: With the ability to complete some programs in mere weeks or months, aspirants can quickly gain the necessary skills and transition faster compared to traditional degree routes.
- Cost-Effectiveness: Given their condensed nature, these courses are often more affordable, making them accessible for many looking to shift careers without incurring hefty educational debts.
Flexibility:
Professional certificates offer significant flexibility, beneficial for working adults and those looking to transition careers:
- Duration Flexibility: Most programs are shorter, allowing candidates to balance learning with other responsibilities.
- Financial Flexibility: Their cost-effective nature means less financial burden, enabling more people to consider them as a viable option for skill acquisition.
- Scope Flexibility: While they provide specialized skills, multiple certificates can be pursued to broaden one's skill set if required.
However, it's vital to understand the potential limitations. Some industries might still prioritize traditional degrees, and the narrow focus of some certificates might limit broader career opportunities. As always, due diligence is recommended before embarking on any career change route.
Academic Qualifications
Academic Qualifications is usually not recommended if you are looking for a career switch.
Specifically, if you already have a degree and the career intend to switch to does not require a specific type of degree, then getting a degree may be very expensive and even a waste of time.
Rather, you should try going for courses instead.
If a degree is indeed needed, such as a Degree in Civil engineering is needed to be a civil engineer, then a degree will obviously be mandatory for a career switch.
Generally, we wouldn’t recommend getting an academic qualification for a career switch. It is a significant financial commitment (most degree programs start at $20,000) with no guarantees of job placement. In fact, only 60.9% of fresh graduates from private universities secured full-time permanent jobs.
