In case you weren’t aware, NUS launched a new degree – the Bachelors in Information Technology (also called BIT, which is cute) to help adult learners transition to the IT industry.
This means that anyone who has worked for at least 2 years and has a diploma can get a degree in the IT sector.
So what’s this all about?
Let’s explore this new degree further.
Who is it for?
As this degree is under the NUS School of Continuing and Lifelong Education (SCALE), this degree programme is meant for adult learners who already have work experience.
Simply put, this program is particularly beneficial for professionals aiming to enhance their career prospects in the rapidly evolving digital landscape.
What do I need to do?
Prospective graduates must complete a curriculum focusing on IT fundamentals and elective specialisations. This includes:
- University-level general education courses (24 Units)
- Major requirements (76 Units)
- Unrestricted elective courses (28 Units)
Essential courses cover computing and mathematics foundations, while electives offer specialisations in Business Analytics, Software Engineering, and Cybersecurity.
The program is flexible, allowing you to balance studies with a 9-5 job.
How do I get in?
To gain admission, applicants must be:
- Over 21
- Possess a diploma or equivalent qualification
- Have at least two years of work experience
The program also requires an assessment to determine eligibility for course exemptions, ensuring a personalised and efficient learning path.
Why should I consider this?
Long story short, this BIT program is ideal for career advancement or switching into the IT sector.
Tech skills are becoming universal because digital technology now permeates almost every industry, transforming how businesses operate.
Additionally, the increasing reliance on data and the internet in daily life and work makes tech literacy essential for a wide range of professions.
If you’re considering future-proofing your career, this degree might be able to open some new doors, even within your current industry.
With a focus on in-demand skills and flexibility in learning, it's also a practical choice for working professionals.
In addition, NUS's reputation in IT education adds significant value to this degree.
Seems all clear to us.
If you'd like more insight on this programme, Associate Danny Poo recorded an interview with the Straits Times not too long ago, which you can read about here.
Final Thoughts
To us, embarking on any degree course is not an easy decision to make.
Especially if you’ve already been working for a couple of years.
However, it's an investment that promises not just knowledge, but a transformation of your career trajectory into areas you’ve probably never dreamed of being in.
If you're still undecided and want to hear directly from the faculty about the BIT degree, you can register for their information session here, held on 16 Janurary 2024, from 7.30-8.30pm over zoom.
So, take this leap and keep leveling up - your future self will thank you for it!
