Course Overview
Diploma in Community Care for Elderly course equips individuals with knowledge and skills to manage and care for the elderly. In order to provide professional care for the elderly, students will be taught the underlying scientific theories such as the psychological, social, biological and medical reasons for the elderly behaviour and techniques needed to care for the elderly. Students will also learn the management, health and safety issues related to the care environment.
Another aspect of the program is preparing students to plan for their own professional development in order to keep up with the emerging trends in elderly care. Addressing ageing processes and the common mental issues is a major costly affair worldwide which will be looked at carefully during the course of study. This would allow students to anticipate the future needs and expectation in the elderly care. To deliver elderly care effectively, students will be taught to understand the elderly responses, behaviour and how to communicate or counsel them for good relationship between the elderly and the care worker.
Learners will also develop skills, techniques, personal qualities and attitudes essential for successful performance in elderly care work. This will enable learners to make an immediate contribution to elderly care employment. Learners will develop transferable skills and knowledge which will enable individuals to meet changing circumstances and taking up different levels of responsibilities such as supervisory or management positions. After completion of the program learners will be able to adapt to general changes in the provision and environment of health and social care for the elderly. The program will ultimately prepare individuals who are keen to progress to further professional development of higher-level skills through further studies or career advancement.
Entry Requirements
The minimum entry requirements for the course are:
- Minimum Age: 16
- Academic Level: Minimum GCE ‘O’ Level with 3-subject passes or equivalent
- Matured students who do not meet the academic requirements must be at least 30 years old with at least 8 years of working experience will be considered on an individual basis.
- Language Proficiency: IELTS 5.5 or equivalent
Attendance Requirements
All full-time students who are holding Student’s Pass should achieve a minimum attendance of 90% per month.
To qualify for assessment/examination, students should achieve the following minimum attendance rate:
- 80% attendance rate for Student’s Pass holders.
- 75% attendance rate for non-Student’s Pass holders.
A student who is absent or considered to be absent from class/session, must provide documentary proof i.e. Original Medical Certificate issued by a General Practitioner, Polyclinic or Hospital to his/her Course Administrator immediately on his/her return to school.
